Lithium Ions and Insulin: Effects on Carbohydrate and Electrolyte Metabolism
نویسنده
چکیده
It is not yet possible to interpret thesc results completely. The acids affected are all dicarboxylic acids with a chain length of between C, and Cs. The glutarate derivatives showed the greatest increases. Citrate excretion was unchanged (Bond et d., 1972). This suggests that the range of compounds affected is determined by chemical structure rather than metabolic relationship, and that this is a transport effect. On the other hand several of the acids are intermediates in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and in a preliminary experiment the increased excretion of tricarboxylic acid-cycle intermediates produced by intravenous infusion of succinate (Nordmann et at., 1955) was accompanied also by an increased excretion of glutarate. Thus i t is possible that the effect of lithium salts is primarily on the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and that the other metabolites are excreted in unusual quantities because of competition for a common transport system. Berl & Clarke (1971) have reported that with guinea-pig brain slices lithium salts greatly affect the pattern of incorporation of [ l-14C]acetate into amino acids derived from the tricarboxylic acid cycle. This suggests that the effect of lithium salts on these intermediates may not be restricted to the kidney and may have some relevance to its therapeutic effect.

Changes in Biochemical Parameters Related to Lipid Metabolism Following Lithium Treatment in Rat
Lithium is widely used in medicine as an anti-depressive drug. In spite of abundant literature, questions on the side effects of lithium ions are far from being answered. In this study, the effects of lithium on biochemical parameters related to lipid metabolism were investigated. Male Wistar rats were treated with different doses of lithium for a period of up to 60 days. Blood samples were col...

Fenfluramine, an anorexigenic agent, is widely used in the treatment of obesity. Besides its anorectic effect, it may also have some effects on general metabolism with the consequence of weight loss. In this study, the effect of fenfluramine on the concentrations of some parameters related to carbohydrate metabolism was investigated. It was shown that the serum insulin level was reduced by ...

Background: Prevalence of obesity and overweight in women increases the possibility of metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Based on the variety of the effects of different type of exercise and the differences in the upper and lower body muscle volume involved in the exercise, the effects of high intensity interval exercise with arm and leg ergometer on metabolism and insulin resistance might be di...
متن کاملINTERFERENCE OF ALUMINIUM WITH CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM IN MALE RATS: A MODEL STUDY OF DIALYSIS PATIENTS
The effects of aluminium and aluminium-citrate on some serum parameters related to carbohydrate metabolism in male Wistar rats were investigated. Daily intraperitoneal administrations of 1 mg/kg body weight of aluminium or aluminiumcitrate (1: 1) for 50 days led to the elevation of serum insulin by 24 or 40 percent respectively, with the concomitant decrease in serum glucose concentrations ...
